SolarWinds Dameware Mini Remote Control Unauthenticated RCE

Critical

Synopsis

Tenable found an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in the SolarWinds Dameware Remote Mini Remote Client Agent Service (DWRCS.exe) version 12.1.0.89.

CVE-2019-3980: Unauthenticated RCE

The Solarwinds Dameware Mini Remote Client agent supports smart card authentication by default which allows a user to upload an executable to be executed on the DWRCS.exe host. The executable will be saved in C:\Windows\Temp\ as dwDrvInst.exe and executed with the privileges of the Local System account. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can request smart card login and upload and execute an arbitrary executable run under the Local System account. *

Proof of Concept

This vulnerability can be demonstrated by executing the PoC (link provided in advisory) as such:

 python dwrcs_dwDrvInst_rce.py -t <target_host> -e <binary_to_execute>

Solution

According to SolarWinds, the vulnerability has been fully remediated in the latest release of Dameware 12.1.2.
